Home gyms…

As of last week we have made a home gym in our garage. We cleaned out the garage, painted it, layed down carpet including a couple of rubber mats for cushioning for dead lifts and put our fitness equipment in. We have a weight bench, weights and treadmill along with yoga bands, skipping ropes and other fitness related items and the biggest expense $534.00 was a squat rack, with a pull up bar, lat pull-down and weighted row attached, which is expected to arrive in a few weeks. Also for comfort we included a couple of cheap fans and a heater for winter.

We did this so we don’t have to pay to go to a gym when, in the long run, it is cheaper to do it at home, we also don’t have to go and drive to a gym and I can come and go as I please. Personally, I find it more comfortable to workout at home as I don’t like working out in front of strangers. Gyms are also known to be a home for all sorts of bacteria which can cause disease. A study found that the free weights had 362 times more bacteria than an average toilet seat, treadmills have 74 times more bacteria than a tap in a public bathroom and exercise bikes have 39 times more germs than a tray at a food court. For me, having a home gym is a cleaner, healthier and overall a better experience and I get more of a workout done when I want and it’s in the privacy of my own home.

We intend to add to the gym with a few other small pieces of equipment some of which I am going to make myself from some ideas I got off Pinterest these include a weight tree (to hold the weights) and slosh pipe which is a long PVC pipe almost filled to the top with water and sealed at each end which moves when you try to lift or squat with it giving your core stabiliser muscles an extra workout. Additionally we are going to buy some rings to hang off the squat rack cage primarily for upper body and ab work.

A home gym doesn’t have to be extravagant, like life, it can be as simple or complex as you like, it can have most of the equipment a normal gym would have and you can certainly get just as good a workout. You can put what you want in it to suit you and you can get your money’s worth out of it.  A home gym is great for all levels from people just starting out or the more experienced it’s a great way to become the strongest best version of you.
